While enrolled at Northwood University (“Northwood”), I understand that I may choose to engage in or be exposed to activities and situations that pose a risk of illness or injury to myself and my property, including, without limitation, Northwood-sponsored clubs and activities, varsity sports, club sports, intramural sports and other events or contests of an athletic nature, field trips, and other on- and off-campus organized experiences (the “Northwood Activities”). I understand that my physical presence at Northwood and my physical presence or participation in the Northwood Activities may involve risk of illness or injury to myself and my property; and that no amount of precaution by Northwood can eliminate such risk. Because of this and in consideration of Northwood’s willingness to allow me to participate in Northwood Activities, I agree as follows:
1. I agree to exercise a reasonable degree of care and abide by all Northwood policies to protect the safety of myself and others while using any Northwood facility, including, but not limited to academic, recreational, and residential buildings, and while participating in any campus activity including, but not limited to, class, class-related meetings, office hours, and other on- and off-campus learning experiences required by or available through academic programming.
2. I acknowledge that the World Health Organization has declared COVID-19 a worldwide pandemic. I further acknowledge that COVID-19 is highly contagious and believed to spread through person-to-person contact. While Northwood may implement preventative measures to slow the spread of COVID-19, I understand that by entering Northwood’s facilities, participating in any Northwood activity required by or available through academic programming, whether on- or off-campus, or by being physically present at Northwood, I may still become infected with COVID-19. I understand Northwood cannot guarantee my safety or immunity from infection. I acknowledge that I am entering Northwood’s facilities voluntarily with full knowledge of the risks, dangers, and hazards involved, and I hereby assume all risk of exposure to COVID-19, injury, or death that may arise from my presence on Northwood’s property or from my participation in any Northwood activity, whether on- or off-campus.
3. I hereby release Northwood, its agents, officers, employees, faculty, staff, and trustees from liability for any illness or injury to myself or my property suffered or arising out of COVID-19, including such illness or injury or to my person or property resulting from any cause other than the gross negligence or intentional misconduct of Northwood, its agents, officers, employees or trustees. I give this waiver and release intending to legally bind myself and my heirs, representatives, successors and assigns.
4. If, during the course of my participation in Northwood activities or events, during my use of Northwood facilities, during my presence at Northwood, or otherwise I notice any situation which I believe causes a significant risk of injury or illness to myself or others, I will promptly notify either Northwood’s Vice President of Academics or Vice President of Finance of the situation in writing. 5. I intend for the release to stay in effect for so long as I am enrolled as a student at Northwood University.
